                    Nadia Benchallal  was born in 1963 in Orthez, France. The recipient of a scholarship from the International Center of Photography in New York in 1990, since 1992 she has been involved in a long-term project concerning the role and influence of women in areas of war and civil strife in the Muslim world, including Algeria, Bosnia, Iran, and the Gaza Strip.

 She joined Contact Press Images in 1994. Among her awards are a Visa d'Or from Perpignan in 1994, and a Mother Jones Grant and a W. Eugene Smith Fellowship in 1997. She was also the recipient of a "European Eyes of Japan" grant, with which she documented a small town in the Japanese heartland in 2001.
