Sebastião Salgado was born in 1944 in Aimorés, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. A master practitioner in the tradition of social documentary and “concerned photography,” he is the author of many critically-acclaimed books including, An Uncertain Grace; Workers; Migrations: Humanity in Transition; The Children: Refugees and Migrants (all published by Aperture), and The End of Polio (Bulfinch Press). Twice named Photographer of the Year by the International Center of Photography, he has received photography's most prestigious awards and more honorary doctorates from major universities around the world than any other photographer.
In 1994 he co-founded, with Lelia Wanick Salgado, the Paris-based production agency Amazonas Images, dedicated solely to his work. Distributed by Contact Press Images in the US and in France since 1995.
